MTP USB Device Failed | Connecting iPhone and Windows 7

I just had a really hard time to make an iPhone 4 device being mounted as a camera-drive in Windows 7. iTunes did his job syncing email, calender and contacts without any trouble, but the device did not show up in windows-explorer and photo-syncing with iTunes didn’t work either. Reinstallation the “Apple Mobile Device” driver always led to the same result – “MTP USB Device failed to install”. Here is a solution which worked for me on two different computers.

iPhone and MTP-USB device failed to install

Google brought to me a lot of suggestions of how I could fix this issue, none with avail. I reinstalled iTunes many times, disabled Kaspersky, restarted the Apple Mobile Device service, restarted Windows more times than reasonable – all of the usual suspects.

In the end, this suggestion found here did the trick:

  1. Run the registry editor (type in “regedit” in the command-line”)
  2. Backup your current registry (File -> Export)
  3. Navigate the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlSet / Control / Class
  4. On the left side, search for the entry {EEC5AD98-8080-425F-922A-DABF3DE3F69A} and click on it
  5. On the right side, you will find a key which begins with “Upper…” – delete it!
  6. Now unplug your iPhone
  7. Restart your computer
  8. Plug in your iPhone and hopefully find it mounted as a drive again!

Hope this helps!

    • Daniel Lang December 19, 2011 at 05:13 #

      Hallo Sascha,

      Lg,
      Daniel

    Hello everybody,
For all the folks who havent been able to solve the problem, try simple deactivating and reactivating the device
    C > devicemanager > mobile device > deactivate > activate
